Notes on family names and history.

HAYWARD. Around 1844, Joseph Hayward moved from Hathersage (Derbyshire) to Stocksbridge (South Yorkshire), to take up employment with his friend/acquaintance Samuel Fox who had moved from Derbyshire to start a factory at Stocksbridge in 1841. He was joined shortly (before 1851) by his brother William (my great-great-grandfather), and their elderly father Joseph. Joseph Hayward (the younger) became well known in the community both as the inventor/designer of the steel umbrella frame (Fox "Paragon") on which Samuel Fox built his fortune, and as the founder of the local Co-operative Society. I believe he had various business interests, and was also a co-founder of the Hoyland & Hayward Ltd umbrella factory at Eckland Mill, Penistone, but eventually retuned to Fox's, though the Eckland Mill factory continues to this day. One anecdote about Joseph, is that a workman at Fox's factory saw him with his head in his hands, apparently asleep, and reported this to Samuel Fox, who sent the person away with the remark: "He's worth more to me asleep than thou art wakken" (you have to imagine the Yorkshire/Derbyshire accent). Joseph had a very large family. His picture appears in several local history books, and oil-painting portraits of him and his wife Elizabeth are in existence. I own one of his products, a metal comb stamped with his name. At least 5 generations of the Hayward family (including me) have worked at Samuel Fox & Co Ltd. I left to go to university, and never went back. There is a very strong tradition of mechanical engineering in the Hayward family.

ROLFE. The Rolfe family came from Depden in Suffolk and were of agricultural labouring stock. They were probably economic migrants to South Yorkshire. It is family lore that the original Rolfe to come to Yorkshire was a coachman in the service of the Wharncliffe family in Wortley. Census records show that several families of Rolfe, and other families, came from the same area of Suffolk around the same time. It is rumoured that the family has some connection with the John Rolfe who was married to the red indian Princess Pocohontas. Other rumour has it that the family is of German descent.

RIDAL. A family name of long-standing in the Bradfield/Bolsterstone/Deepcar areas of South Yorkshire. They owned farmland over mineral deposits (coal, ganister, building stone), and became relatively well-to-do. Jimmy Ridal (the younger) was an eccentric with many renowned exploits. For example his wife, Ann, once announced that she would be glad when he was "under the sod", at which Jimmy was seen around the village wearing a sod of earth on his head! My father remembered that his wife smoked a clay pipe. They had 3 daughters, the eldest of whom, Keziah, met a tragic end. A story that I heard as a child was that the Fox Glen was haunted by a beautiful young woman who committed suicide there, her bones being found after many months in an old coal mine: the rats had eaten her flesh, and she was recognised by her long blond hair. The truth, which we have discovered from contemporary newspaper reports, is no less strange. One snowy night in January 1877 Keziah Beal (she was married with a young child, and had been deserted by her husband) escaped from the Wadsley Lunatic Asylum, where she was an inmate, and disappeared. The asylum was 9 miles from her parent's home, and she just about made it, because her remains were found 6 months later in a drift mine (ie a horizontal mine shaft) at Fox Glen near where her father lived, and she was identified by her asylum clothing. She was aged 28, and these days would probably be said to be suffering from post-natal depression, but the coroner instructed the inquest jury to bear in mind that she was a lunatic!. I would very much like a photograph of Jimmy Ridal (he died in 1901). A relation, Amos Ridal, was a builder and railway contractor, and built many bridges and buildings in the area, including Sheffield Wicker Arches, and retired to Torquay (Devon). Family lore is that the Ridals came from Scotland at the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie, but no evidence has yet been found. If anyone knows of a Ridal family in Scotland in the 1700's will they please contact me.

SHORTLAND. Appear to have been poor Framework-Knitters in Lutterworth (Leicestershire), and were economic migrants to South Yorkshire, several families from that area making the move.

GRAYSON. A very big family of farmers in this part of South Yorkshire, many of whom seem to be called Joseph or Ann. It makes for great confusion when searching the records. In 1828, a close relation of Ann Grayson (her Uncle John Grayson) ran away after a fight in a pub, was caught housebreaking many miles away in Lecestershire, was sentenced to death, later commuted to Transportation For Life, and deported to Van Dieman's Land (now Tasmania). He had used the alias William Butterworth, and no-one knew what had happened to him, even his wife. After 12 years he began writing letters home, and these letters remain in existence and are both very sad and very interesting (to be added to this site later). As William Butterworth he remarried and became a prosperous miller, and his descendants continue to live in Tasmania.
